Basically, your pension is calculated in the following way:
  1. The annual wages are adapted to the evolution of consumer prices, and are brought up to the price level applicable when the pension is calculated.
  2. 60 % of that wage is divided by 45 (the normal career length).
  3. This is repeated as many times as there are actual career years.
  4. That yields a career of between 1/45 and 45/45.
  5. The amounts obtained for each year are added up, and that is the yearly pension for a single person.
  6. In the case of a family pension, the amount for a single person is multiplied by 1,25.

Providing there is at least 2/3 of a full career, there is also a guaranteed minimum pension, which on February 1st 2012 amounts to:
  • 16.310,21 EUR for a married pensioner whose spouse does not receive any social benefits and/or who does not exercise any banned professional activities;
  • 13.052,28 EUR for other pensioners.
